February 2003 - Atlantic Aero, Inc. Announces An STC For Deactivation of Learjet 30 Series/Aeronca Thrust Reverser
Atlantic Aero announced approval of a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the deactivation of
Aeronca thrust reversers installed on an estimated 300 Learjet 35 and 36 series airplanes. The supply
of parts for Aeronca thrust reverser systems has become limited. Without a consistent parts supply,
operators have opted to pin irreparable thrust reversers per the maintenance manual. However, a recent
interpretation by the FAA's Western Region calls for the repair and return to service of pinned thrust
reversers at the next major inspection interval, which recurs at 1,400 flight hours.
With this STC, operators will have the option of permanently deactivating thrust reversers. The STC
calls for electrical deactivation of the thrust reversers, the removal of the air motors and cables
that operate the blocker doors, and the installation of new rails to fully immobilize the units. The
net effect of the STC is a 138-pound reduction in aircraft empty weight. "We believe this is an
important STC for Learjet 35 and 36 operators. It provides a safe, efficient means to solve the problem
of thrust reversers that simply can't be economically maintained," said Jim Spinder, President of
Atlantic Aero. He added, "We have customers with fleets of Learjetâs that were facing the shutdown of
their operations."
